SAREHOLE MILL

COUNTERPART OF MORTGAGE DATED 23 MAY 1769

A vellum Indenture being a Counterpart of Mortgage in Fee of a messuage or tenement, land and a Mill known as Biddles Mill (now called Sarehole Mill) situate in the parish of Yardley in the County of Worcester (now part of Hall Green in Birmingham) dated 23 May 1769, Mr Richard Eaves to Mr Richard Horsman.

This is a highly important building and Biddles Mill later became known as Sarehole Mill, the name by which it is still known today. In the noted history of the building it is recorded that Biddles Mill was taken down and the new mill built by Richard Eaves which is the current building and this document describes the Mill itself as having been "lately taken down and new built by the said Richard Eaves". One wonders if the large sum of money being borrowed in this Indenture was actually to cover the costs of the building of the Mill we know today.

At one time Matthew Boulton's father rented the Mill and when his father died, Matthew Boulton took over the Mill before moving to Soho in Handsworth. However, Sarehole Mill is probably best known for the connection with JRR Tolkien. It is said to have been his inspiration and that he used the Mill as a location in The Lord of the Rings.
