MORGAN FAMILY, HEREFORDSHIRE

These document which appear to be Solicitor’s copies for use in the case, being State of Facts, Affidavit of William Ingles and Affidavit of Adam Rivers Steele, in a matter brought in Chancery to determine the next of kin of WILLIAM MORGAN of Penalt, Kings Caple, Herefordshire.

The documents provide an incredible amount of information about the family of William Morgan as well as other people with the surname of Morgan to determine who was and wasn’t related, and can also help to unravel the infuriating problem so often arising when you get several people from the same parish with the same name but “which one is mine!”.

William Morgan was baptised on 21 February 1755, he married Sarah Morgan nee Howells and he was buried on 17 February 1818 at Kings Caple.

The parties in the case were Catherine HOWELLS, James HOWELLS, Thomas JONES, Sarah JONES, George JONES and the State of Facts as to Pedigree was ordered by the Court of Chancery on 4 June 1840.

The Affidavit dated August 1842 of Adam Rivers Steele of No 1 Lincolns Inn Fields, Middlesex, Attorney at Law and Solicitor is particularly interesting as he travelled down to Herefordshire in July 1842 and spent some time travelling around the various parishes noting all the information about people who might possibly be related.

He looked at the Parish Registers for the parishes of Ross, Bridstow, Peterstow, Walford, Llangarren, Garway, Abbey Dore, Much Birch, Llanwarne, Kings Caple, Sellack, Newchurch, Monmouth, Staunton and Newland called Stanton, Gloucestershire.  He also looked at the archives at Hereford of the Bishop of Hereford, took copies of memorial inscriptions and interviewed various people who knew the family such as servants and who were at that time “very old” and remarked one person to be “decrepit...but whose memory is remarkably acute...”. The dates and information he noted on his travels are all included in his Affidavit.

The other document is an Affidavit of William Ingles a butcher and farmer of Sellacks Marsh who knew William Morgan, and this also provides very interesting information as well as a bit of an insight!
